4月30日, 2024 — Themed "Sunrise to the Mother Land," this year's Mon Afrique (translated to "My Africa") event burst with energy and excitement, featuring a 时尚 show, 音乐, 和诗歌. Mon Afrique is a lively campus-wide celebration of all cultures and peoples of the African continent, 接受的艺术, 文学, 时尚, 和烹饪.

The event began in 2012 when Emelia Lartey '15, a Ghanaian student from England, aimed to feature the African community on campus — from the diversity of its countries and cultures to political issues and its emerging role in the world. Mon Afrique continues to grow each year, becoming one of the largest student-led events at Marist, 庆祝非洲, educating the campus community, and supporting African students at Marist.

What started as a small project more than a decade ago has now blossomed into a grand celebration in the McCann Center.

“Mon Afrique has two main goals,” said Loik Makuza '25, one of three planning leaders of the event and also a business major in charge of event promotion. “One is bringing Marist students together from different countries and cultures to work towards a common goal and create a splendid event. The second is to showcase the beauty of the different cultures found on the African continent.”

“Being a co-leader or part of the committee gives you the opportunity to have connections all throughout campus,” said Mbaba Diop '24, a 时尚 merchandising major also making decisions on 时尚 at the event. “On top of doing something meaningful for your community, it gives you a chance to network on campus before you have to do it in the outside world.”

"The essence of Mon Afrique lies not only in the vibrant celebration of African cultures but also in the people behind the event," said Hussein Bitambuka '25, a computer science major running the event's financial operations. "I am continually inspired by the dedication and passion of fellow students who volunteer their time and talents to perform, assist in event planning, or simply show up to learn about and experience the richness of African cultures through art 和烹饪."
